This is a technical setup, not a hosted sign-up. There is no browser-store listing. You supply the project and credentials and pay for infrastructure and model usage.

Before you begin

Have these ready.

The repository's installation guide is the maintained source for commands and configuration.

  • Node.js 22 or 24 LTS, npm, and Docker with buildx.
  • Google Cloud CLI and Firebase CLI, signed into the project you will own.
  • A Google Cloud project with billing or credits.
  • A Gemini API key for your installation.
  • Chrome for the extension.

The setup sequence

Service first. Extension second.

  1. Prepare your project and sign-in

    Set up Firebase and Google sign-in. The hosted page and Chrome extension use different OAuth client types; follow the guide for each.

  2. Deploy and check the service

    Review the deployment plan before applying it. Confirm the full Virgil page loads and Google sign-in succeeds before moving on.

  3. Connect the extension

    Follow the guide to generate its stable identity and connect it to your service. Then save a passage and check the receipt.

  4. Choose access and model settings

    Review models, spending and privacy in Settings. You can admit verified-email members; each member has a separate learner board.
